Lyrics[]

Verse 1
Break a bone
Got me on my knees
You break my heart just to watch it bleed
I’m sick with love
Sick, like a disease
Don’t call me up just so I can please you
I can’t stand the way you’re smiling
I can’t stand the way I’m lying

Chorus
I know, I know, I know you got the key
And you know, you know, you know that it’s for me
It’s not up to you, you know it’s up to me, but...
Curiosity will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh

Verse 2
Look at me
Left here in the corner
Stupid girl, I really tried to warn her
Walked the streets all night until you came around
Knew that you would come before you ever even made a sound

Chorus
I know, I know, I know you got the key
And you know, you know, you know that it’s for me
It’s not up to you, you know it’s up to me, but...
Curiosity will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Curiosity

Bridge
So don’t break me tonight
This is crazy love
And you know I’m gonna follow you home
Through the rain
'Cause I need your love
And you know I’m gonna follow you home
'Cause I need your love and you know I’m gonna follow you

Partial Chorus
I know, I know, I know you got the key
You know, you know, you know that it’s for me
Well, I think that we should try it out to see, yeah
Curiosity...

Bridge
So don’t break me tonight, this is crazy love
And you know I’m gonna follow you home
Through the rain
'Cause I need your love, yes, I need your love
So don’t break (Don't break) me tonight (Me tonight), this is crazy love
And you know I’m gonna follow you home
Through the rain
Cause I need your love, yes, I need your love

Outro
Will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Curiosity will never let me go
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Uh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh

Writing and development[]

Curiosity was written sometime during the development of Jepsen's planned second studio album, sometime in 2010 or earlier, alongside producer of the track Ryan Stewart. During development, the song was a notable shift from the folk-influenced Tug of War and the early material written for the new project. [2]

Jepsen says Curiosity "came rushing out differently" with "pop and snap and a bubble-gum chorus", and she questioned how it was going to fit onto the new record. "I was singing it in the mic, to demo it out, with these guts that I didn’t know I had. And it was exciting. It was like a braver version of me that I never had experimented with before, at least not out loud to people," she stated. [2]

Jepsen "didn't know what to do" about the song, but felt like it was a natural progression to take. Over the course of eight months in 2010, she "thought about it constantly", wondering if she could take on the new direction, and had been wrestling with the idea alongside Ryan Stewart. She eventually concluded that the project would feature both pop and folk influences in equal parts, and described it as a "pop-folk collaboration." [2][3]

Jepsen and Stewart were equally excited about the song, and on November 24th 2010, the pair took to the studio to finalise the track, and promised each other that they'd finish it. [4] By June 2011, the song was in the process of being mixed.[5]

Themes and lyricism[]

Jepsen says Curiosity is written about herself, "a girl hung up on a bad boy, a guy she knows is no good but she'll never stop thinking about". In terms of its subject matter, the song tackles "a universal push-and-pull" and was likened to the Tug of War title-track by Jepsen's official website. [2]

Announcement and release[]

The song would first be revealed alongside the announcement of the Curiosity album in January 2012, through Jepsen's social media and iTunes Canada. [6] Later on May 3rd 2012, Jepsen would similarly announce the release of the track as an official single that same day. [7][8]

In May 2019, Jepsen recollected that Curiosity was actually her original choice of the lead single for the project instead of Call Me Maybe, and explained how she 'fought tooth and nail' with her label to release the song first until her family convinced her otherwise. [9]

Music video[]

A music video for Curiosity, directed by Colin Minihan, was filmed in June 2012 though ultimately never released. On November 24th 2012, the full video leaked online via YouTube. [10][11][12]
