Writing and development[]

§ Main article: Emotion Writing and development

Writing for Emotion[]

When developing her third studio album, Emotion, Jepsen wrote close to 250 songs for the project over the course of three years. [1] Jepsen recalls having 'heated debates' with her label over how many songs she was able to include on the album, narrowing it down to 40 before landing on just 17 in total. [2]

Fan requests and origin[]

The creation of Emotion Side B was inspired by repeated fan requests during the Gimmie Love Tour for an 'Emotion 2.0' sort of release, Jepsen cited. 'I've made so many songs, and it's just sort of this catalogue of like, 'Well, it feels like they're in my closet now. Do I share them, still?' She explained, 'What really encouraged me to be brave and expose those ones that were not in the initial running, was just meeting people face-to-face when we went on tour, and having a meet and greet where I'd be asked by people, you know, 'What about Emotion 2.0?' I was like, 'Well, I kind of have one! Maybe I should share it?' [3]

Release dilemma[]

On the night before Emotion Side B was set to release, Jepsen contemplated scrapping it entirely - she explained how she had started to overthink it and was scared of the reception the project would receive. She stated, 'You know, B-Sides was something that almost never came out because I got scared! I get in my own head. I called my A&R the night before release and I said, 'I know we got it all prepared but I just don’t wanna do it' [...] and sure enough I let him convince me, and I’m proud.' [4] In 2018, Jepsen described Emotion Side B as 'the album that almost never was.' [5]

Announcement and release[]

Emotion Side B was first announced by Jepsen via Twitter on August 21st 2016 - the one year anniversary of the release of Emotion in the United States. In her post, Jepsen shared the EP's artwork and release date. For the week leading up to release, Jepsen posted song snippets and teasers each day across her social media accounts.

Emotion Side B was first released digitally worldwide on August 26th 2016. The EP would later receive a limited physical release on September 9th 2016, and a release on vinyl in December 2016 in the United States through Interscope and School Boy, and March 2017 in Canada through 604 Records.

Emotion Side B almost never was. Well, technically all the songs existed. I just didn't think to share them until we toured. But meeting many of you face to face, getting to share in one of the most joyful touring experiences of my life, all I wanted was to give back more of the feelings you all gave me. So this is for you guys, a B sides album full of some extra tunes we made on the journey to Emotion. I hope you enjoy. And thank you for making the past year so incredible. The memes, the covers, the parties, and the shows. You keep me inspired, so yeah... new album on the way... but here's something to hold yah over till then. ;) All the love

Carly Rae Jepsen, 2016

Album cover[]

Emotion Side B[]

The cover art for Emotion Side B features an illustration of Jepsen, based on the image used for the original Emotion album cover, with portions of the image recoloured. The logo for each album is also shared and reused with the colours reversed, and featuring additional Side B text in the corner of the composition. The artwork itself is inspired by and reminiscent of 1980s synth-wave visuals and represents the musical influence from the same time period present throughout the project.

Emotion Side B+[]

The reissued version of the EP, Emotion Side B+ features a reworked version of the original artwork. Similarly, an illustrated image of Jepsen is used in the centre of the design, more reminiscent of the original Emotion cover. The background to the design features a grid pattern with additional illustrations of Jepsen, based on images taken during various photoshoots for Emotion.

First Time[]

Although no official singles would be released for Emotion Side B, First Time was previously released as a promotional single exclusively in Japan for the remix album Emotion Remixed + in March 2016.
