Writing and development[]
Far Away was written sometime between 2020 and 2022 during the development of The Loneliest Time. The song was written by Jepsen alongside Tavish Crowe and Nathan Jenkins, between Toronto and London. [2] Carly recorded the song alongside Bullion on their first meeting in Toronto, after first being introduced via Zoom. [3]
Themes and lyricism[]
Far Away introspectively discusses the end of a relationship, from Jepsen's perspective of realising she was in the wrong; she explained, "Having been in a relationship for a hot minute and it ending in a way that I wasn’t expecting, it was nice to be the one who was humbled and to see that I messed up, and try out a song where I wrote from the bad perspective—learning what I would do differently in a future thing." [4]
"It’s almost easier to be newly in love or heartbroken. And those are extreme things that we live in our 20s. But I think in my 30s it’s fun to be like, 'Oh, maybe I’m the one who can be at fault in this relationship and be humbled by this and learn a thing. Is there room for a pop song in that lesson?'" [4]
"I love the idea that I just answered yes every time. I wrote from the heart. And I think the reason I was allowed to write from the heart was because I didn’t know when the world was going to open up and I didn’t know when I’d be sharing music." [4] Jepsen described she "allowed [herself] to enjoy writing about the grey areas of things" with Far Away, and stated it was her personal favourite song of the album. [4]
