Fever was written sometime between 2014 and 2015 during the development of Emotion, though it would ultimately fail to make the final cut for the album - it was instead released as part of Emotion Side B. The song was written by Jepsen alongside Kyle Shearer, Nate Campany, and Alexander Castillo Vasquez.

Fever was initially released exclusively in Japan as part of Jepsen's second remix album Emotion Remixed +, on March 18th 2016. Alongside Emotion Side B, it was globally released on August 26th 2016.
