First Time was written by Carly Rae Jepsen alongside Swedish production duo Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub, and British songwriter Wayne Hector. The song was likely first written with Hector on October 20th 2014, when Carly visited Brighton to write new music. Between October 24th and 25th, in a studio session in Sweden, Jepsen likely recorded the song alongside Your Type.

First Time was first released exclusively in Japan as part of the remix album Emotion Remixed +, on March 18th 2016; that same day, it was released as a promotional single. It was globally released on August 26th 2016 as part of Emotion Side B.
