Higher is one of few songs in Jepsen's major label discography not to be written by Jepsen herself; instead, the song was written by Claude Kelly and Greg Kurstin, who also produced it. The original demo of the song recorded by Kelly leaked online in January 2020, featuring a less finalised production though with its lyrics unchanged.
It's assumed the song was given to Jepsen by producer Greg Kurstin, who collaborated with her on Boy Problems for the album. Higher was likely recorded sometime between 2014 and 2015 for Emotion - though the song failed to make the cut for the album originally, it would later see its release on Emotion Side B in 2016.
