Writing and development[]
Making the Most of the Night was contributed to Emotion by Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler, and was written mostly by Furler alongside Samuel Dixon, Emre Ramazanogla, and the members of American pop-rock band HAIM. Notably, the Haim sisters were credited on the track under the pseudonym of 'The Trinity'. [2]
Jepsen described the track as 'mostly [Sia's] baby'. She stated, 'I was involved with it but not in the same way she was. I very rarely take outside cuts but that was one that I couldn’t ignore the genius of. I was so happy to have her guidance on that one.' [3]
Original demo recorded by Sia[]
Furler's original demo of the song leaked online in early 2016, with minor differences in composition compared to the version released by Jepsen. Most notably, Jepsen's version features a new intro which was previously not present; this appears to be Jepsen's contribution to the song. Additionally, the production of the song also received heavy reworks and notable differences during its development.
Announcement and release[]
Making the Most of the Night was released on June 24th 2015 through School Boy and Interscope Records, with the Japanese release of Emotion. Prior to the worldwide distribution of the album, the song was released on August 7th 2015 as the album's fourth promotional single.
The song received an official audio video that same day, which has garnered over 400k on YouTube as of October 2021. For unknown reasons, the video is only available in select regions. [4]
