Carly Rae Jepsen's scrapped third studio album is an unreleased 'pure-pop' Kiss-follow up album that was developed in 2013, prior to Emotion.
Writing and development[]
Conceptualisation and early development[]
In Los Angeles in 2013, Jepsen would begin work on her then-upcoming third studio album. Described sonically as 'pure-pop', the project was envisioned as a follow-up to Kiss released a year prior in 2012. Jepsen states that she began writing for the project the day Kiss was turned in to her label, and had three songs from those writing sessions in mind for the album; additionally, Jepsen was also considering a song to cover for the project. [1][2]
Jepsen described the album would be pop influenced, but her own 'version of pop' and was interested in drawing influence from folk songs she listened to with her parents growing up. Jepsen states she was inspired by Robyn, Kimbra, La Roux, and Dragonette for the project, artists she was listening to at the time, and wanted to create music that was something 'a little deeper,' particularly in the verses. She explained, "That's what I love about the pop stars I just named, is they don't do just your regular kind of pop songs. There's some stuff to hold onto and dig into. That's what I want to do." [2] This idea manifested in the songs Sun On You and 10,000 People.
Jepsen confirmed she had been writing new material in 2013 alongside Benny Blanco, Josh Ramsay, and Ryan Stewart. [2] During the development of the project, Jepsen would also work with Kevin Maher, Toby Gad, and production duo Stargate on new music as well.
Indie-folk album and Emotion[]
Ultimately, Jepsen wasn't satisfied with the direction of the original "pure-pop" project, and would instead begin work on a now-scrapped indie-folk album in New York between 2013 and 2014. Jepsen states the indie-folk project was born of a "natural rebellion" against the pressure of following-up Call Me Maybe and the traditional pop sound of the previous third studio album project. [1]
Whilst in New York, Carly would continue to experiment with different sounds, and ultimately end up working on the Emotion title track, which she states largely ended up "taking shape" in New York. The Emotion title-track inspired the new sound of the album, "80s pop with alternative productions," she described. Once the new direction was decided upon, both previous projects as a whole were scrapped, as Jepsen believed Emotion was a better balance of what she wanted to achieve artistically. [3]
