Lyrics[]

Verse 1
We were both headed different ways
Both in a rush trying to get away
I ran into you, ooh-ooh
Like a crash of thunder
Out in the rain, waiting for the bus
We started talking 'bout different stuff
And it's true, ooh-ooh
There's an eighth world wonder
And from now on

Pre-Chorus
You're not as lonely as you think you are
I'm trying to tell you

Chorus
Anything you want, boy, I can make it happen
We can fall in love, and I could be your sweetie
Any time of day, boy, I'll be your distraction
We can make it happen
I could be your sweetie, sweetie, yeah
You're not as lonely as you think you are
I'm trying to tell you
Anything you want, boy, I can make it happen
We can fall in love, and I could be your sweetie, sweetie, yeah

Verse 2
A dinner date, and a glass of wine
We stayed up late and lost track of time
When I'm with you, ooh-ooh
I feel a different hunger
You held my hand and you didn't let go
I'm gonna kiss you now
I thought you should know
And it's true, ooh-ooh
There's an eighth world wonder
And from now on

Pre-Chorus
You're not as lonely as you think you are
I'm trying to tell you

Chorus
Anything you want, boy, I can make it happen
We can fall in love, and I could be your sweetie
Any time of day, boy, I'll be your distraction
We can make it happen
I could be your sweetie, sweetie, yeah
You're not as lonely as you think you are
I'm trying to tell you
Anything you want, boy, I can make it happen
We can fall in love, and I could be your sweetie, sweetie, yeah

Bridge
Anything you want, boy
Anything you need
Anything you want, boy
Anything you need

We can fall in love, and I could be your sweetie
Any time of day, boy, I'll be your distraction
We can make it happen
I could be your sweetie, sweetie, yeah
You're not as lonely as you think you are (As lonely)
I'm trying to tell you
That all I want to do is just be here with you
And give you satisfaction, in saying sweetie, yeah

Writing and development[]

Sweetie was written with songwriter and producer Jack Antonoff of American rock band fun. and Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara in June 2012 during the development of Kiss. In July 2012, Jepsen recorded and produced the song with Klas Åhlund whilst she was in Sweden. [2][3] Elements of the song were written as early as May 2011. [4]

Working with Jack Antonoff[]

Sweetie would serve as Jepsen's first collaboration with Antonoff and came about as she was 'really digging' the band fun. whilst touring the United States for the first time. She stated, 'I was hearing them a lot on the radio and thinking like, 'okay, I need to figure out who this band is and know more about them,' and at the same time Jack [Antonoff] from the band was doing the same thing - finding out about me, so our managers hooked up and we both expressed our interest in working together.'

'We did a collaboration called Sweetie together on the record, and that was one of those instant, creative chemistry moments. We got together, he showed me some ideas, I showed him some ideas, and within a day the song was written and finished.' [5] Antonoff states Sweetie was a song he was 'still really proud of' and had 'the best time' writing it with Jepsen. [6]

Antonoff also explained how Jepsen was the first person to work with him in the studio outside of a band, and that Sweetie was his first solo co-written song to be recorded and released. [7] Due to this, Jepsen and Antonoff sparked a creative partnership and continued to work on new music together for both Emotion and Dedicated between 2014 and 2019.
