Lyrics[]

Verse 1
Baby, I could praise you
Try to turn your head around
Could you take a compliment? Oh, oh, oh
Everything I say, you
Find a way to drown it out
Make it like an argument

Pre-Chorus
I see you a different way
So take my eyes to borrow

Chorus
Keep a window for me open
Open for me always
Please don't lock the door
Ooh, I'll be your special somebody
Hands over your body
Keep you wantin' more

Verse 2
I know you're not sleepin'
Thinkin' that the sky could fall
You never let the dreams get in, oh, oh, oh
The secrets that you're keepin'
Well, I want you to share them all
'Cause, baby, I can handle it

Pre-Chorus
Just hold my hand a different way
And take my eyes to borrow

Chorus
Keep a window for me open
Open for me always
Please don't lock the door
Ooh, I'll be your special somebody
Not just anybody
Keep you wantin' more

Bridge
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I'm needin' ya
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I need your love
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I'm needin' ya
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one

Chorus
Keep a window for me open
Open for me always
Please don't lock the door
Ooh, I'll be your special somebody
God, I love your body
Keep me wantin' more
Keep a window for me open
Open for me always
Please don't lock the door
Ooh, I'll be your special somebody
Hands over your body
Keep me wantin' more

Outro
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I'm needin' ya
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I need your love
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I'm needin' ya
You were the one, you were the one, you were the one
And I need your love

Writing and development[]

Writing with Theo Katzman[]

Window was written during the development of Dedicated sometime between 2017 and 2018, alongside Theo Katzman of funk band Vulfpeck. Carly expressed her desire to work with Vulfpeck in a July 2017 interview with EliteDaily, after discovering their song Back Pocket, which would go onto inspire Window. [2][3]

"Back Pocket" introduced Carly to Theo Katzman. He would later visit Carly's home in Los Angeles with his guitar, and the pair would begin writing together. Carly states that Window was written "fairly quickly" afterwards; she recalled, "We just strummed it out acoustically together and it felt like it came together in less than half an hour." [4][2]

Carly says Window was a "fun write" and something new, as she hadn’t experimented with a funky/groovy kind of song before; she also stated how Katzman was able to "direct the track" and "guide it to where it was supposed to go." Carly was surprised the song ended up making the running for the album in the end, since it was so unusual. She stated it was a perfect example of experimentation, as otherwise she never would’ve thought that funk would be her style of music. [2]

Rework from previous songs[]

The bridge and outro of Window, "You were the one, you were the one, and I'm needing ya", had been written previously and reworked into a number of different songs, such as being used as the pre-chorus in Disco Darling and the chorus to Long Distance Lover, both Dedicated album outtakes.

Carly states the hook had been "carried around for a while" and that she "didn’t know where to put it", until it was ultimately included as part of Window. When she got to writing the bridge, Jepsen thought it would work well in the song and Katzman agreed. [2]

Themes and lyricism[]

The lyricism and symbolism in Window is reminiscent of that of Want You In My Room, although Jepsen states this wasn't intentional. The use of window as a metaphor in both songs is meant to represent the feeling of an early relationship, Carly explained. "I was trying to catch that first love feeling and just gravitated to the word window." [5] Windows are a somewhat recurring theme in Carly's lyricism and are similarly mentioned in First Time and Sweet Talker. In Window's case, the term "to keep a window open" refers to letting something or somebody into your life, such as a new relationship or lover.

Carly also explained that the general premise of the song is to show her partner that she can always be depended on, "I’m always here for you, keep a window open for me." Throughout the song there's a switch-up in the chorus, which changes "Keep you wanting more" into "Keep me wanting more" which is meant to showcase that the relationship goes both ways - Carly says, "I like to give as good as I get, and if you keep a window open for me, I’ll keep a window open for you." [2]

Regarding the pre-chorus, Carly thought it was "kind-of creepy" listening back to it, but that it made sense to her at the time. She explained the lyrics, "I see you a different way, so keep my eyes to borrow" refers to her partner's negative self-perception; "People have this perception of themselves and they're so locked into it that you almost want to be like, 'Do you even know how incredible you are?! I wish you could see yourself the way that I see you.'" [2]

Live performances[]

Window was performed live for the first time during The So Nice Tour in Montreal, Quebec on September 24th 2022.
